Simple Present Tense - Uses

1. to show a habitual or regular action.

    Adverbs like 'usually', 'always',etc are often used.

    e.g. Henry usually plays tennis on Sundays.

2. to state a general truth.

    e.g. The sun rises in the east.

3. to indicate future action, especially with verbs of movement or travel like

     'go', 'come','leave','stay', or 'arrive'.

     e.g. The train arrives this evening at 4.oopm.

4. in commentaries on games and plays.

     Rashid gives a high serve. Ali smashes it. Rashid returns the smash.

     The shuttlecock goes out.

5. in exclamations, announcements and demonstrations.

    e.g. She looks pretty in the blue dress.

6. to express thoughts or feelings at the present moment.

    e.g. She looks worried.

7. in conditionals to express a possible action in the future.

    e.g. Do not go if the rain gets heavier.

8. with time clauses introduced by 'as soon as', 'when', etc, to

     indicate future actions.

     e.g. They will stop their work as soon as he leaves the room.

9. in the passive voice

    e.g. Ice is sold in the shop.
